Mary Kom is a famous Boxer belonging to India and she has made the country proud with her praiseworthy achievements in her area of sports. She is the only woman boxer of India who has qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics and also won Bronze medal for the country. It's so amazing to see her in the serene and peaceful state even after being a five time champion in boxing.
When she was born, she was called as Mangte Chungneijang but she changed her name as "Mary" when she embarked on the long journey of boxing world so that it could be easier to pronounce. She was born in a very young family and she started working in the farm at a very young age. While she was in school, she had keen interest in playing various sports including football, hockey and athletics. Vey surprisingly, she was not much interested in boxing at that time unlike other sports.
She was inspired to take up the sports only after she came to notice the success of the Manipuri boxer Dingko Singh, who, playing at Asian games in 1998 won a Gold medal. But it was very hard for her to take her interest further because the game was considered something that is fit only for the male lot of the society. No matter, what, she was not someone who will subjugate her dreams because of a mindset and she went to Imphal to take formal training for the same. And, it was her courage to go against a set of society rules that had made her icon among women not only in India but around the world. In addition to the success in sports, she is now also involved in humanitarian work of teaching boxing to the children of poor.
Mary Kom was born in the Manipur state of India in the place named as Kangathei. She was born to Mangte Tonpa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom who were labourers in a farm and belonged to the poor section of the society. Mangte Chungneijang was the name that her parents gave her when she was born but later on she changed it to Mary Kom for the ease of pronunciations. Mary was the eldest of all her siblings and she had the liability not only of going to the school but to look after her siblings. Also, she would work into the farms with her parents.
In the beginning she was admitted to Loktak Christian Model High School and there she completed her studies till class VI. After that she went to St. Xavier Catholic School and thereafter she left her studies before even completing schooling. The interest for sports was in her even during her school days but the fact is astonishing that she never used to play boxing.
After she got inspired by the win of boxer Dingko Singh in 1998 in the Asian games she went to Imphal to take training in boxing from the coach, M. Narjit Singh. She was very much passionate about the sports and she put hard work. She would even practice the game late at night when everyone else would leave.
The first win in her career was at her first state level game, women's boxing championship in Manipur in 2000. Later on she came as winner of the Seventh East India Women's Boxing Championship held in West Bengal where she won gold. From the year 2000 to 2005, Mary Kom won five national championships in all. From the year 2010 to 2005, this profoundly prolific woman won AIBA world boxing championship three times.
Later on in 2008, she played in the Asian Women's Boxing Championship in India and won a silver medal. In 2009 she won a Gold medal in Vietnam in the Asian Indoor Games. In the preceding year in 2010, she won a gold medal in Kazakhstan. Then she went to Barbados and there she won Gold in AIBA women's World Boxing championship that was the fifth in her career.
